Sigma 85mm f1.4 DG DN I Art Lens – L Mount

The Sigma 85mm f1.4 DG DN | Art Lens is the latest in Sigma’s ever-growing range of lenses designed specifically for mirrorless cameras. The 85mm focal length is ideal for shooting portraits and its f1.4 aperture is perfect for producing shallow depth-of-field to separate the subject from the background.

This is the perfect lens for portrait, wedding and event photographers.

Key Features:

  • Class-leading optical performance
  • Fast f1.4 aperture
  • Compact and Lightweight
  • AFL button
  • High-speed auto-focus
  • Superb build quality

Class-leading optical performance

The Sigma 85mm f1.4 DG DN I Art Lens has a focal length that is perfect for portraiture with a bright, f1.4 aperture making this lens a must-have addition to any photographer’s kit bag. The f1.4 aperture allows for greater results in low light situations as well as delivering outstanding bokeh and depth-of-field shots.

The lens boasts five Special Low Dispersion (SLD) elements and one aspherical element to help to control optical aberrations including chromatic aberration, flare and ghosting.

In addition to five SLD elements and one aspherical element, the lens has incorporated the latest high-refractive-index glass, which works to correct aberrations that cannot be effectively handled by in-camera correction. With a particular emphasis given to the elimination of axial chromatic aberration, users will enjoy sharp images with no colour bleeding all the way up to the maximum aperture of F1.4.

Compact and lightweight

The lens is extremely compact and lightweight weighing in at only 630g with a body length of 94.1mm and a 77mm filter size. This makes it far smaller and lighter than the original Sigma 85mm f1.4 Art lens.

The lens has been designed exclusively for mirrorless cameras and combines a very large lens diameter, superb optical performance and a lightweight and compact body when compared with other 85mm f1.4 lenses.

Impressive feature set

Introduced on this lens is a new iris ring lock switch, which allows users to lock the iris ring either at auto or between apertures F1.4-F16. This ensures that unintended movement of the ring from auto to manual, or vice versa, during shooting so users can focus on creating their shot.

There is a Focus Mode Switch on the lens barrel and an AFL button that allows various functions to be assigned from the camera body according to user preference.

The AF system employs a stepping motor that is optimised for both phase-detect and contrast AF. Not only does this provide a smooth shooting experience only possible on a mirrorless camera (such as face/eye AF), but it has reduced the size of the lens body thanks to a much smaller focus element.

AFL button

The lens has an AFL button that can have various functions be assigned from a camera body, while a stepping motor allows a good balance between acceleration and quietness of the AF drive for stress-free focusing. The lens is also compatible with the Eye-Detection AF used more frequently in mirrorless cameras, which is capable of high-precision focusing at the time of portrait photography.

Dust and splash-proof structure

In addition to the dust- and splash-proof structure, the 85mm F1.4 DG DN | Art uses materials such as aluminium and TSC (Thermally Stable Composite) to achieve superb Art-line build quality, but with weight kept to a minimum.

Lens construction:

  • 11 groups, 15 elements (5 SLDs and 1 aspherical lens)
  • Angle of view: 28.6
  • Number of diaphragm blades: 11 (rounded diaphragm)
  • Minimum aperture: F16
  • Minimum focusing distance: 85cm / 33.5in.
  • Maximum magnification ratio: 1:8.4|Filter size:φ77mm
  • Maximum dimensions × length: φ82.8mm×94.1mm / φ3.3×3.7in.
  • Weight: 630g / 22.2oz.

Charlotte ★★★★★

Focusing on portraits, I love how the autofocus locks onto eyes instantly even in dim light. The build feels really solid with that metal barrel and the included tripod collar is a nice bonus.

Benjamin D. ★★★★★

Sharp wide open and tack-sharp by f2, the bokeh on this lens is just gorgeous for portraits. The build quality feels incredibly solid

Daniel M. ★★★★★

Shooting wide open at f1.4, the bokeh is buttery smooth and the sharpness on the eyes is unreal. I’ve been using it for portrait sessions and the weight is manageable for a lens this fast, even on a long shoot.
