Canon 18-135mm vs 18-55mm: Which EF-S Zoom?

Quick answer

Choose the Canon 18-135mm for its longer reach and versatile zoom range; pick the 18-55mm for a lighter, more affordable kit lens option.

Trade-offs at a glance

• Reach vs. convenience: The 18-135mm gives you 135mm telephoto reach for portraits or distant subjects, while the 18-55mm stops at 55mm—fine for general use but not for close-ups of faraway objects.
• Price vs. value: The 18-55mm is significantly cheaper, ideal if you're on a tight budget or just starting out. The 18-135mm costs more but saves you from buying a separate telephoto zoom later.
• Weight vs. flexibility: The 18-55mm is lighter and more compact for travel. The 18-135mm adds weight but gives you a single-lens solution for a wider variety of scenes.
